Asia-focused animal welfare nonprofit organization Animals Asia (www.animalsasia.org) has partnered with US-based skateboard and apparel company Hendrick Boards (www.hendrickboards.com) with Beards for Bears (www.beardsforbears.org), an international campaign that invites men to be their hairiest for the sake of endangered moon bears.
In some Asian countries, intelligent and sentient moon bears are kept in small cages for up to 30 years, while their bile is extracted through catheters, needles and open wounds. The bile is used as a form of medicine, despite the existence of many herbal and synthetic alternatives. Animals Asia works to end this cruel practice of bear bile farming–housing rescued bears in our Vietnam and China Bear Rescue Centers—expansive sanctuaries where the bears may live out the rest of their lives in peace.
The Beards for Bears campaign asks men to grow a beard in an effort to raise awareness and funds to help the bears. Men are encouraged to register with a photo at BeardsforBears.org as a commitment to growing their facial hair until the end of June. At the site friends, family members and coworkers may sponsor beard-growers, contributing important funds toward Animals Asia’s work to help moon bears. Eco-friendly skateboard and clothing company Hendrick Boards are exclusively offering distinctive, ethically produced Beards for Bears t-shirts for both men and women, including one that states boldly, “I’m Hairy Because I Care,” and a Beards for Bears inspired design depicting a moon bear donning a beard. Every shirt purchased sparks a $5 donation directly to Animals Asia.
“We are thrilled to partner with Animals Asia’s Beards for Bears campaign in an effort to end bear bile farming,” said David Hendrickson, Founder & CEO of Hendrick Boards. “Through our shirts, we hope to raise awareness of the issue that confronts moon bears, while making donation to Animals Asia with the sale of each and every shirt.” The mega-hit TV program, “GLEE” recently showcased Hendrick Boards products in their spring premiere.
